01

The most spectacular place to stay in Patagonia (and why we say so)

We say it with the bias of people who live here six or seven months a year. But some of it can be checked: Fitz Roy, 3,405 meters high, in the dome window. A lenga forest all around, with no other building in sight. And the best-known trail in El Chaltén starting a few steps from your bed.

Almost every place to stay in El Chaltén is in the village. We are 15 km north, on Provincial Route 41, where the trails to Laguna de los Tres and Piedra del Fraile begin. For many guests that is the whole difference: you do not drive out to the mountains, you are already in them.

We have been here since 2014. Eleven domes, a Dining Dome, a Lounge Dome and a wood-fired hot tub. Nothing else, and nothing else is needed.

The domes: glamping with a private bathroom and a wood stove

There are eleven geodesic domes, with forest between them. Every one has a private bathroom, a wood-burning stove, a proper bed and a large window toward the mountains. It is not a tent: it is a room shaped like a dome, in the middle of the forest.

There are four kinds:

Dome en-suite
Double, twin or triple, up to three guests. Fitz Roy view.
Deluxe Dome
32 m², the first in the row and the most spacious. A big bed, leather armchairs facing the window, sheepskins.
Premium Wooden Dome
Two wooden domes across the track, the furthest from the camp, with the whole valley in the window.

You book a kind of dome; we assign the exact one. Nightly prices are on the site, taken from our booking engine.

For couples: a romantic getaway or a honeymoon in Patagonia

Many of our guests are couples. Some are on their honeymoon, some marking an anniversary, some who simply wanted a few days without a phone.

A day here: breakfast with Fitz Roy in the window, a hike with a packed lunch, the wood-fired hot tub when you get back, a four-course dinner in the Dining Dome, and the stove lit in your dome. At night, if it is clear, the sky far from the village lights.

04

No signal and no wifi, on purpose

There is no cell signal and no internet at Eco Domes. It is not a fault: we decided it on the first day and we are not changing it.

Each dome has its own 12 V solar system with USB ports: enough for the lights and to charge a phone or a camera.

What happens instead is simple: people talk at dinner, read, go to bed early and set out on the trail in daylight.

05

Full board in the Dining Dome

Stays are full board: a buffet breakfast, a full packed lunch for the trail and a four-course dinner that changes with the season. Drinks are extra; you choose your wine from our selection.

Meals are in the Dining Dome, 78 m², with Fitz Roy in the window. The kitchen is for guests only and closes at 9 pm.

Fifteen kilometers from the village, this matters: nobody has to drive at night to find dinner.

A wood-fired hot tub and a cold plunge facing the mountains

A wooden hot tub heated over a wood fire, with a cold plunge beside it. In the open air, facing the mountains. After a full day to Laguna de los Tres, it is the best spot in the camp.

Hiking from the door: the trails that start at your dome

El Chaltén is Argentina’s National Trekking Capital, and almost everyone who comes wants to hike. From Eco Domes you walk out of the door, no car or shuttle needed.

Laguna de los Tres
Demanding. About 8.6 km each way, a full day: 7 to 10 hours round trip. The lake at the foot of Fitz Roy.
Piedras Blancas Glacier viewpoint
Easy. 1 h 40 each way.
Piedra del Fraile
Easy. About 2 h 30 each way. The refuge is privately run, open November 1 to April 6, cash only.
Laguna Capri and down to the village
Moderate. From Laguna Capri it is 4 km more, downhill, to El Chaltén.
Lago Eléctrico and Marconi Glacier
Registration and a guide required. The crossing to Marconi Glacier takes several days.

The Fitz Roy trails are inside Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the entry fee is paid online or by QR code at the park gate.

When to go to El Chaltén: the season, month by month

We are open from November to April and closed in winter.

November
We open. The peaks are still white.
December
The longest days of the year: the sun sets after 10 pm.
January
High season. Book early.
February
The warmest afternoons.
March
The wind eases and the lengas begin to turn.
April
The lengas turn red. The last month before winter.

Patagonian weather changes within the day. Fitz Roy can stay hidden for days and clear in an hour. That is why we suggest at least three nights: more chances to see it clear.

An eco lodge for real: firewood, sun and a light footprint

Each dome is heated by its own wood stove, and so is the hot tub. The light comes from solar panels, dome by dome. The domes are light and rest on the ground among the lengas: we try to touch the forest as little as possible.

The team lives on site all season. More than ten years after the first summer, the forest is the same.
